Russia’s claim to the art of gritty crime and mafia movies was not a thing of coincidence. The recent focus on violence, language, and sex in soviet cinema is a direct reaction to the strict government censorship soviets endured until the Glasnot policy was passed in the late 1980’s. Dressed here in black on black, Alex reminds us of a rebellious counterculture kid and the action movies we have grown to appreciate.
